Cairns Convention Centre will host Men’s and Women’s preliminary round events for Basketball from Thursday 5 to Tuesday 10 April, with the finals being held at the Gold Coast.
Festival 2018 events will also be held in Cairns. Detailed information about the planned activities and how to get to Festival 2018 celebration zones will be provided in the lead up to the Games.
Games Route Network
The Games Route Network (GRN) will link the Regional Village Cairns to the Cairns competition and training venues, helping get athletes and officials to their events on time and the Cairns Airport.
In Cairns, the GRN is located along the following roads:
- Wharf Street
- Sheridan Street
- Spence Street
- Grafton Street
- Lake Street
- Aumuller Street
- Hoare Street
- Clarke Street
- Wilkinson Street
- Grove Street
- Airport Avenue.
Games Lanes will only be located on the Core Games Route Network on the Gold Coast and will not affect Cairns.
Other road impacts
There will be a range of temporary changed traffic conditions around the Cairns competition venue and Festival 2018 celebration zones in the lead up to, during and after the Games.
Planning is currently underway to identify the temporary traffic changes required in Cairns. Currently there are no plans for residents located close to the competition venue or Festival 2018 celebration zones in Cairns to require local access permits.
Some local bus services will be enhanced (including improved frequency and/or hours of operations) to cater for increased travel demand during the Games. More information on these changes will be available closer to the Games.
Residents and visitors will play a vital role in keeping the city moving by making changes to the way they travel. Non-essential travel will need to be reduced and people will need to re-time, re-route, re-mode or revise their travel plans by:
- travelling outside peak times
- travelling on public transport
- cycling or walking small distances
- taking alternative routes when driving to key destinations.
The necessary information will be provided well before the Games begin to enable residents and visitors to plan ahead. Information will be provided through:
- an awareness and information marketing and communications campaign
- a dedicated travel information and advice website
- social media channels
- detailed maps of hotspot areas and times to avoid.
We encourage businesses, residents and visitors to think about other modes of transport rather than using their vehicle.
